First Week Survival Guide | InternStays Resources

Your checklist for the first week: setting up transit, grocery shopping, meeting neighbors, and getting oriented in your new city.

Your First Week Checklist

You've arrived at your internship housing. The boxes are (mostly) unpacked. Now what? Here's your day-by-day guide to getting settled and making the most of your first week.

Day 1: Move-In & Orientation

  • Complete your move-in inspection checklist (available in your portal). Document any existing damage with photos.
  • Get your keys, access cards, and WiFi credentials.
  • Locate fire exits, laundry rooms, and common areas.
  • Meet your RA or building manager — they're your go-to for questions.
  • Introduce yourself to your roommate(s) if applicable.

Day 2: Neighborhood Essentials

  • Find the nearest grocery store and stock up on basics.
  • Locate your nearest pharmacy and urgent care clinic.
  • Download a transit app (Google Maps, Citymapper, or your city's transit app) and figure out your commute to work.
  • Get a transit card or pass if public transportation is your primary mode.

Day 3: Work Prep

  • Do a dry run of your commute at the time you'd leave for work.
  • Lay out your first-day outfit and make sure your badge/ID is ready.
  • Review any onboarding materials from your employer.

Day 4-5: Explore & Connect

  • Walk your neighborhood. Find coffee shops, restaurants, and parks near your housing.
  • Check if your building has a group chat or social events for interns.
  • Explore the City Intel section on InternStays for local tips specific to your city.
  • Set up your bank account if needed (many cities have local credit unions with no-fee accounts).

Weekend 1: Self-Care & Settle In

  • Organize your room — make it feel like home for the next few months.
  • Do a big grocery run and meal prep for the week.
  • Connect with other interns — check Slack groups, LinkedIn, or company intern channels.
  • Call home. Your family wants to know you're alive.

Ongoing: Stay on Top of Things

  • Check your InternStays Portal regularly for payment reminders and documents.
  • Submit maintenance requests promptly through the portal — don't let small issues become big ones.
  • Keep your housing team's contact info saved in your phone.
